Mainstream media is still relevant in today's digital age- Academician

Senior lecturer at the Faculty of Leadership and Management of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) Dr Sofia Hayati Yusoff said this is because the mainstream media group consists of a group of professional and trained media practitioners.
"We have a group of media practitioners who are very professional. They are well-trained, well-credentialed, licensed and authoritative, so the dissemination of news is based on authentic sources.
"Malaysians should place high trust in the mainstream media because they produce news in accordance with the law and they understand journalism ethics as outlined by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ)," she said when appearing as a guest on the Bernama TV ‘Apa Khabar Malaysia’ programme here today.
In addition, Sofia Hayati said the mainstream media also played a significant role in countering the spread of fake news on social media, for example, when the country was dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We can see the role of the mainstream media at that time to repel fake news that has been spread on social media.
"So the role of the mainstream media is not only to convey what is authentic and true, but they also have a big role to ward off fake news that can lead to slander," she added - BERNAMA
