SPAN has established a special technical committee to investigate water supply disruption issues in Kedah, Penang

SHAH ALAM - The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has established a Special Technical Committee (JKTK) yesterday following the drop in water levels at Sungai Muda last May 14, which affected the operation of several Water Treatment Plants (WTP) in Kedah and Penang.

"The stakeholders involved have suggested SPAN to thoroughly investigate the incident.

"The committee was established for the purpose of obtaining information,evidences and to examine all aspects related to the incident," the commission said in a statement today.

On May 14, Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada) estimated that around 251,800 user accounts in three districts in Kedah namely Kuala Muda, Kulim and parts of Baling would experience water disruptions on the same day.

The unscheduled water supply disruption began at 7.25am due to the sudden drop in the water levels at Sungai Muda, caused by damages on its barrage gate.

The unexpected incident caused the operation of Pinang Tunggal WTP at Sungai Petani and Kulim Hi-Tech WTP to temporarily stop until the water level stabilises

In the meantime, SPAN explained that the committee is also responsible for recommending measures for improvement that could be practiced by all stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of the water supply.

"The final report is expected to be finalised in the middle of June 2023," he said.
