PAPAR - A baby was found under the basement of a house in Kampung Sapat, here, today.
At around 4am, the homeowner discovered a baby boy, believed to be a newborn, without any clothes.
Papar District police chief Deputy Superintendent Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said the 52-year-old witness reported hearing a baby crying from under the house's basement when he woke up to use the bathroom.
"After almost 10 minutes the baby's crying, the witness finally went down the basement where there was an object moving.
"The witness found a baby boy with the umbilical cord still attached, left naked on the ground under the basement of his house," he told Sinar today.
He further said that the witness then called his wife and asked her to bring a towel to cover the baby.
"The witness called the police before the baby was taken to Papar Hospital for further examination.
"The baby is believed to be less than 24 hours old, and upon examination, he was found to be in a stable condition," he said, adding that the baby has been admitted to the children's ward at the Papar Hospital.
The Papar Welfare Department has been notified of the case.
Kamaruddin added his team is actively tracing the mother. The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for deliberately concealing the birth of a baby.
