Najib supporters may shift to PN in upcoming state elections

PUTRAJAYA - Supporters of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak may shift their support to the Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the upcoming state elections in August, said Pertubuhan Jalinan Perpaduan Negara Malaysia Chairman, Syed Muhammad Imran Syed Abdul Aziz.

He said that this is because the supporters are disappointed with the treatment of the Madani government towards justice for Najib, which he claimed was not upheld.

"I want to convey to all 'bossku' supporters that they will support PN in the upcoming state polls," he said in a video recording uploaded on TikTok.

Syed Muhammad Imran, who is also the Kampung Melayu Batu Caves Selatan Umno branch chief, claimed that he and several other Umno members are also disappointed with party President, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and division leaders for not standing up for justice for Najib.

"The Umno division leaders should stand firm, but you didn't do it.

"We have lost trust, the comments from Najib's son suggesting support for the Unity Government were completely inappropriate," he said.

Najib is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence at Kajang Prison after failing in his final appeal at the Federal Court to set aside his conviction, sentence, and fine on seven charges.

On July 28, 2020, the Kuala Lumpur High Court found Najib guilty on seven charges involving breach of trust, abuse of power, and money laundering related to SRC International Sdn Bhd and sentenced him to 12 years in prison and fined him RM210 million.

Najib's conviction and sentence were subsequently upheld by the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court.

The Election Commission (EC) has set August 12 as the polling day for the state polls, which will be held simultaneously in six states, namely Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu.

Meanwhile, the nomination day and early voting dates are scheduled for July 29 and August 8, respectively.
