PUTRAJAYA - The decision by Perikatan Nasional (PN) to introduce a different National Day logo and theme this year different from the one from the federal government as sparked discomfort and uneasiness among various parties.

The proposal to use the logo and theme 'Teguh Muafakat Malaysia Sejahtera' (Strong Consensus for Prosperous Malaysia) in the four opposition-led states of Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis has been criticised for allegedly sidelining the spirit of patriotism.

PN Youth Chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said on Saturday that PN may likely adopt this logo and theme.

During its launch at the Pas Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Ahmad Fadhli had said the logo was base on the hibiscus flower with five petals, representing the national flower and it incorporates colours from the Malaysian flag.

In May, Communications and Digital minister Fahmi Fadzil had announced the National Day and Malaysia Day 2023 theme would be 'Malaysia Madani: Tekad Perpaduan, Penuhi Harapan (Determined Unity, Fulfilled Hopes),' with Malaysia Madani being lifted as the official logo.

National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said any proposal to use a different logo and theme for National Day that diverges from the officially announced theme is identified social challenges that could possibly have an impact on social unity.

Aaron stated that such proposals hinders government's efforts to ensure the welfare of the community. "It is closely related to the spirit of cooperation, tolerance and good relations between the federal government and state government which needs to be addressed in a dignified manner.

"Leaders at every level should play an essential role as catalysts for unity, including the administration at both the federal and state level through the dimensions of political, economic and social boundaries," he said in a statement.

Aaron also spoke on the significance of National Day theme launched on May 27, stating that it promotes unity and patriotism, sowing deep love for the country.

He said every citizen in the country is well aware that the celebration held each year is observed with a spirit of patriotism and love for the country, commemorating the efforts of past independence fighters who tirelessly ensured Malaysia remained free from colonial rule.

"The National Day celebration is a national festivity. The logo and theme are established as symbols of togetherness among the people of Malaysia," he said.

Meanwhile, in Ipoh, Youth and Sports deputy minister, Adam Adli said the proposal for state governments under PN to use different logos and themes is purely political in nature.

He said National Day celebration should be observed by all citizens with a spirit of unity without any connection to any political party or ideology.

"It's highly controversial for any party to propose different themes for the celebration which is seen as divisive.

"I hope this matter won't be pursued. Respect the spirit of federalism, don't divide the society in such a manner," said the PKR youth chief.

"I believe that the proposed action is purely a political consideration, not a consideration within any context of governance or national identity," he said this during a press conference after officiating the Perak State-Level Fit Malaysia Tour 2023 yesterday.
