BANGKOK - Sarawak is keen to adopt the best methods used by Thailand’s logistics and distribution system to improve connectivity and facilitate the seamless movement of goods in the state, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said.

He said Sarawak plans to build lorry terminals in four major towns - Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri to create a reliable and effective logistics and transportation network.

He explained that Sarawak is studying several effective models in the region, including Thailand, with the hope of adopting their best practices.

"Our visit to Thailand has given us a better understanding of how lorry terminals operate. This knowledge will be very useful for the implementation of the pilot project in Miri.

"After this visit, we have a clearer picture of the model lorry terminal. We may modify or adopt some of the plans to fit our needs in the Miri terminal,” Lee told Bernama here.

Lee, who was leading a delegation on a working visit to Thailand from Aug 27 to 31, said the first lorry terminal will be built in Miri as a pilot project as it is the most urgent need.

"We are at the planning stage now. The proposed Miri lorry terminal is tentatively planned to take off toward the end of next year,” he said.

He added that lorry and truck drivers in Sarawak often travel long distances, such as from Kuching to Lawas or even to Sabah.

"Many of them stop overnight in Miri, but there is currently no proper terminal or parking area for them. As a result, they often park their vehicles on the roadside, which can be a safety hazard and a nuisance to residents.

"To address this issue, the Sarawak government plans to set up a proper terminal in Miri with facilities such as a warehouse, dedicated parking space, accommodation, and eateries.

"This will provide lorry and truck drivers with a safe and convenient place to stop overnight, and it will also help to improve traffic flow in the city,” he said.
