BERLIN - Lance Stroll will not compete in Sunday's Singapore Formula One Grand Prix in the wake of a heavy crash in qualifying, his Aston Martin team said.

Stroll lost control of his car in the final turn towards the end of the first qualifying session on the Marina Bay street course on Saturday, reported dpa news agency.

He slammed into the barriers, causing big damage to the car, but was able to walk away without major injuries which was confirmed after a mandatory medical check-up.

Team principal Mike Krack said in a statement that while "the whole team is relieved that Lance was able to step out of the car after yesterday's accident... he is still feeling the after-effects of such a high-impact crash.

"Our priority now is that he makes a full and speedy recovery. Together, we have decided that he will sit out this evening's race and instead focus fully on returning to the cockpit for next weekend's Japanese Grand Prix," Krack said. - BERNAMA-dpa
