SHAH ALAM - Notification of license expiry for p-hailing riders is among the initiatives taken by Grab Malaysia and Foodpanda to ensure that gig economy workers do not commit road offences.

Communications and Digital Minister, Fahmi Fadzil said, he had conducted a meeting with the Road Transport Department (RTD) the Malaysian Digital Economic Corporation (MDEC) and the two companies on Monday.

The meeting was to seek clarification on the issue of a food delivery rider who worked without a license and had his motorcycle confiscated recently.

"I welcome these efforts by the companies so that riders can do their jobs more safely, the aspect of road safety and compliance with the law is very important," he said in a post on Facebook on Monday.

On September 13, a video went viral on social media showing a rider walking while carrying a bag of food after his motorcycle was confiscated by the RTD during a roadblock in Nilai recently.

The man was seen walking and still wearing a helmet in the hot weather after not being able to continue working due to his motorcycle being confiscated.

According to Fahmi, in total there are almost 200,000 riders on various platforms throughout the country who are exposed to the risk of having an accident while working.

"The RTD informed me that until May 2022, out of 1,242 road accidents, a total of 112 food delivery riders died.

"Thus, the Ministry through MDEC will continue to work with the p-hailing and gig economy sectors in an effort to advance the digital economy in Malaysia," he said
