BENTONG - The atmosphere in Felda Chemomoi was bright this morning as voters came out to cast their votes in the Pelangai by-election at SMK Chemomoi voting centre.

SMK Chemomoi is one of the nine polling centres for the constituency, which opened at 8am today.

The Pelangai constituency has a total of 16,456 registered voters.

Out of this number, 16,383 voters are expected to cast their ballots today, while an additional 73 individuals, including police and Election Commission (EC) officers, have already cast their votes via postal ballots.

The voter composition in the Pelangai constituency is 70 per cent Malay, 20 per cent Chinese, and the remaining portion made up of Indians and indigenous people.

Breaking down the voter statistics, the Pelangai constituency includes 8,254 male voters and 8,202 female voters.

Notably, 3,728 of these voters fall into the young demographic between 18 and 29 years.

Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Kasim Samat is scheduled to cast his vote at SMK Chemomoi.

The other two candidates, Datuk Amizar Abu Adam from the Barisan Nasional (BN) and independent candidate Haslihelmy DM Zulhasni are not expected to vote in the Pelangai constituency.

The Pelangai by-election is a three-way contest, with the PN candidate, BN candidate, and independent candidate all vying for the seat.

This election was prompted by the unfortunate plane crash in Shah Alam on Aug 17, which resulted in the loss of the incumbent assemblyman, Datuk Seri Johari Harun.

The polling process is set to conclude at 6pm following which the ballot papers will be brought to the vote-counting centre at the Felda Kemasul public hall for ballot counting.
