SHAH ALAM - Academics have warned against exploiting the colonisation issues in Gaza for personal agendas.

Speaking to Sinar Daily, they stressed that the Palestinian cause should unify Malaysians in their pursuit of justice, rather than creating divisions.

Political analyst Datuk Dr Jeniri Amir highlighted the unifying potential of the Palestinian cause.

"This issue should be a unifying symbol of justice for all Malaysians, regardless of their religion or race.

"It's important for lawmakers and politicians to find common ground, as this is a humanitarian, not a religious issue," he said.

Jeniri also called on politicians to demonstrate a unified commitment to global justice and peace.

"Their actions should echo the historical context of British colonialism in Malaya," he added.

Israel unleashed a massive bombing campaign in Gaza after Hamas fighters launched an operation across the Gaza border on Oct 7.

More than 10,000 people have since been killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza, half of them children.

Echoing Jeniri's sentiments, Afi Roshezry Abu Bakar from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman condemned the politicisation of the Gaza bloodshed by local parties for their gain.

"This trend in the Malaysian parliament, particularly post the 15th General Election, is worrying.

"Politicians seem to be using every issue for personal gain," he said.

The senior lecturer stressed the importance of responsible monitoring by authorities to prevent the exploitation of the Gaza situation.

"Many MPs in Dewan Rakyat appear unprepared and uninformed. Without proper oversight, this could pose a threat to national security and the ethical standards of Dewan Rakyat," he added.

He urged the public to seek out verified information and not solely rely on political statements.
