SHAH ALAM - The relentless rise in vehicle traffic due to rapid economic growth has exacerbated traffic congestion, contributing to a decline in patience among Malaysian drivers.

Counseling psychology expert from Sultan Idris Education University Dr Fauziah Mohd Saad said this impatience was due to the anxiety induced by prolonged traffic jams, particularly during peak commuting hours.

"The patience of drivers is easily tested, especially when other road users disregard traffic rules, particularly during congestion, leading to outbursts of anger and frustration.

"This situation is further exacerbated for individuals struggling with underlying mental health conditions such as depression, stress, and anxiety," she told Sinar.

Fauziah's comments come in light of a recent High Court ruling that found a former IT employee, Yew Wei Liang, guilty of causing the death of Syed Muhammad Danial Syed Syakir on the North-South Expressway four years ago.

The incident stemmed from a dispute over a toll lane, escalating into a scuffle and a chase that ultimately resulted in the victim's untimely demise.

Fauziah added that the pressures of modern life, which can disrupt individuals' emotional equilibrium, also contribute to unethical behavior on the road.

"People may resort to aggressive actions, exacerbating tensions and leading to conflicts among road users.

"An over-reliance on personal vehicles due to inadequate public transportation infrastructure further contributes to these tensions," she added.

To address this growing issue, Fauziah advocates for a multi-pronged approach that includes enhancing public transportation infrastructure, promoting road safety education, and encouraging mindfulness practices among drivers.

She stressed that cultivating patience and respectful behavior on the road is crucial to fostering a safer and more harmonious driving environment.
