Batik in Malaysia has evolved from traditional craft to a contemporary art form, an evolution that's fueled by passionate entrepreneurs like Azrina Lasa of Batik Tektura and Amy Blair of Batik Boutique.

Azrina’s journey began in 2017, driven by a desire to move beyond typical floral motifs, fusing architectural-inspired designs with traditional batik techniques.

Meanwhile, Blair, captivated by Malaysia’s cultural richness upon moving here 17 years ago, sought to preserve batik’s heritage while creating globally appealing, sustainable products.

Both founders not only showcase the beauty and craftsmanship of batik but also empower local artisans, particularly women, by blending cultural heritage with modern innovation.

Blair who founded Batik Boutique emphasised that batik is not merely a print or motif; it is a meticulous process of layering colours and wax-resistant designs on fabric.

She explained that while traditional batik-making remains an intricate and time-honored craft, modern advancements have bridged the gap between heritage and scalability, ensuring that the art form stays relevant in today's fast-paced market.

It also reduces design errors and save both time and costs.

“These techniques streamline the labour-intensive process of traditional hand-drawn batik, yet they preserve its essence and craftsmanship. At the same time, we remain deeply committed to supporting artisans whose hand-drawn creations embody the soul of this heritage.

“To strike a balance between affordability and quality, we offer a diverse range of products; from hand-stamped batik for everyday wear to premium, hand-drawn masterpieces for those seeking true artistry.

“By ensuring transparency about the creation process and the value of each piece, we help customers connect with the story and effort behind every product,” she said in an interview with Sinar Daily.

When asked how to change the perception of batik as expensive or exclusive to certain social groups, Blair stressed the importance of showcasing it as an accessible and versatile art form.

She suggested that this could be accomplished by providing products at diverse price ranges while preserving the quality of craftsmanship and the richness of its cultural story.

“Smaller items like scarves, tote bags and accessories can serve as an introduction to batik for a broader audience. Inclusivity can also be fostered through diverse designs that appeal to different cultures and age groups, paired with modern silhouettes that resonate with younger generations.

“Additionally, marketing campaigns featuring real people from all walks of life wearing batik in everyday scenarios can help break stereotypes, making it relatable and approachable for everyone,” she said.

Meanwhile, Batik Tektura owner, Azrina, shared that while the techniques for batik stamping have largely stayed the same, advancements in dye mixing have dramatically improved colour coordination, resulting in harmonious palettes akin to Pantone standards.

She also highlighted that many batik designers now utilise software such as AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator and Procreate to craft motifs, allowing them to visualise and fine-tune patterns and colours before creating copper blocks or transferring designs onto fabric.

“This approach minimises design errors while saving both time and costs. At Batik Tektura, our pricing reflects the originality and craftsmanship of our handmade batik fabrics. We ensure affordability by carefully managing tailoring expenses, sourcing raw materials efficiently and opting for cost-effective retail spaces outside of malls.

“Batik can be crafted on various fabrics, including cotton, cotton-silk, linen and silk. While silk-based batik often commands a higher price, options like cotton, cotton-silk and linen are more budget-friendly, making them accessible to a wider audience.

“Branding also significantly influences the price of batik, as Malaysian consumers tend to pay a premium for products from established brands known for quality and innovative designs,” she said in an interview with Sinar Daily.

However, Azrina stressed that there must be greater efforts to raise public awareness about the intricate craftsmanship of handmade batik and the importance of fair compensation for artisans.

According to her, this would help sustain the craft, attract new talent and ensure its continuity for future generations.

“Smaller batik makers often target either premium or affordable segments, but the current market is overly focused on the Malay demographic. This is partly because most Malaysian batik artisans come from the Malay community and primarily sell unsewn fabrics or a limited range of clothing aligned with their cultural preferences.

“To expand the appeal of Malaysian batik, it is essential for new-generation artisans to diversify their designs and target broader markets beyond the Malay and government sectors.

“A bolder approach can unlock the true potential of Malaysian batik and make it a cherished symbol for all Malaysians,” she said.
