NEW DELHI - India's remote conflict-hit northeastern state of Manipur was on Thursday put under direct presidential rule from New Delhi, four days after its chief resigned.

It comes after assembly members in the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled state could not find a replacement for N. Biren Singh, who quit as chief minister on Sunday.

Ethnic violence between Meiteis, who make up slightly more than half of the population, and the minority Kuki community has killed more than 250 people and displaced about 60,000 since May 2023.

The former chief minister faced criticism over the administration's failure to bring peace to the region and the regional National People's Party withdrew from his ruling coalition in November. - BERNAMA
