FOR those struggling with obesity, the first step is not about exercise or diet plans—it’s about mindset. Accepting the reality of being obese and understanding its implications is crucial.

This initial step often demands self-reflection and a willingness to confront both physical and emotional challenges head-on.

As for Aida Tahir, an individual successfully managing obesity, she said it is crucial to acknowledge as an obese person and face the fact.

This journey, however, is not just about acknowledgment but also about action. Once the reality sinks in, individuals are encouraged to seek professional guidance.

Aida emphasises the importance of engaging with healthcare professionals as a critical first step in managing obesity.

"That’s what I did. I was fortunate enough to have a physician, a specialist who is very caring. She always gives me support and helps me start small," she said.

Aida said the support system extended beyond the clinic, encompassing a network of friends, relatives, and virtual communities.

WhatsApp groups dedicated to weight loss became an integral part of fostering motivation and accountability. These groups operate by setting specific, achievable targets tied to meaningful events, such as Hari Raya or Christmas.

"When we reach our target, we celebrate—not with a buffet but with something that helps us appreciate the journey,” she shared. The groups, which often include friends from different states or even countries, foster an environment of honesty and encouragement.

Beyond personal goals, Aida highlights the need for systemic change, advocating for better access to weight-inclusive therapy.

"It’s not just about appearance. As you grow older, it’s about health. Holistic health means addressing your metabolic rate, fitness, and stress levels,” she said.

Aida believes that community awareness around the implications of obesity—not just its visual aspects—is key to driving meaningful change.

BREAKING STIGMAS IN OBESITY TREATMENT

Commenting further, Health Ministry Head of Endocrinology Subspecialty Service Dr Nurain Mohd Noor stressed the importance of eliminating stigma from the healthcare system.

"When you say, ‘I’m going to the obesity clinic,’ that’s already a stigma,” she noted, suggesting a shift to more neutral terms like “weight management clinic.”

She also stresses the need for stigma-free healthcare providers who are trained to offer compassionate care.

"Obesity management isn’t just about weight—it’s about health. Comprehensive treatment should include medications tailored to address complications like cardiovascular or metabolic issues, as well as robust mental health support," she said.

Dr Nurain also said that mental health is crucial and it has to be included in the management of patients with weight problems.

According to Dr Nurain, the Health Ministry has been proactive in addressing obesity through various campaigns.

However, she believes more collaboration is needed to ensure effectiveness.
