Bolt reinforces strict driver standards in line with Apad regulations
Its general manager said savings made whether from streamlined processes or cost-cutting at the headquarters, are passed directly to its driver-partners as extra earnings, a strategy that helps Bolt stand out from local competitors.

KUALA LUMPUR – Ride-hailing platform Bolt is putting regulatory compliance front and centre, emphasising that all its drivers must meet the standards set by the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad).
Bolt general manager Afzan Lutfi said the industry is tightly regulated, with requirements such as background checks and minimum age criteria designed to ensure a safe and reliable experience for passengers.
"There are thousands of registered drivers who have been approved by Apad to legally begin driving on the platform.
"There is a minimum age requirement for drivers and a maximum age limit for vehicles.
"We also have qualification standards and we go beyond those to ensure even higher quality," he said during Bolt’s Aidilfitri Open House, here, recently.

He said Apad’s regulations covered vehicle conditions, driver qualifications and additional safety measures, with Bolt implementing further safeguards.
Since its launch in November, 2024, he said Bolt has seen a 540 per cent surge in driver-partners and a 280 per cent increase in registered passengers, particularly in the Klang Valley.
Afzan also highlighted Bolt’s focus on fair earnings for drivers, balancing affordability for passengers with competitive pricing and discounts.
The platform offers multiple ride categories, from budget-friendly to premium options like the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire.
"At Bolt, we benchmark against other players and always strive to offer more affordable pricing and discounts," he added.
Afzan said the company operates on a principle of frugality, focusing on running a lean and efficient business.
Any savings achieved, he said, whether at the headquarters level or through streamlined processes, were passed directly to its driver-partners in the form of additional earnings.
He said this approach was one of the key ways Bolt sets itself apart from local competitors.
The company’s rapid adoption of this model has also led to major improvements in service efficiency, with average estimated arrival times (ETA) cut in half.
He said this not only ensures quicker and more reliable rides for passengers but also reinforces Bolt’s commitment to a driver-first, cost-effective and seamless ride-hailing experience.
