SHAH ALAM - Consumers should verify information carefully before making a money transfer via the Quick Response (QR) code to avoid falling victim to fraud.

Cybersecurity expert Adlyn Adam Teoh warned that failing to check carefully could leave users vulnerable to having a legitimate code replaced with a fake one, resulting in serious consequences.

He said in general, users also faced difficulties in identifying a legitimate QR code from a fake one if not thoroughly checked.

"Many users don't take the time to check and immediately transfer money because they want to act quickly. This is very dangerous because we might accidentally send money to the wrong account.

"Usually, we can't confirm whether the QR code is legitimate. Therefore, it is important to verify its authenticity. Individuals scanning the QR code need to ensure that the recipient is the correct beneficiary.

"Ideally, they should confirm this right after scanning the QR code by showing the recipient the beneficiary's name and the transaction amount that appears before confirming the money transfer process or checking the beneficiary's name. This simple but effective approach can help avoid mistakes or problems," he said.

It was reported that the use of QR codes has became a new norm among Malaysians, from banking services, exchanging contacts, to ordering food.

However, with the increase in QR code usage, cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has warned people in the country to remain vigilant against the growing threats related to such service fraud.

Further commenting, Adlyn said individuals scanning the QR code should also take proactive steps by showing the recipient the beneficiary's name and the transaction amount displayed on the screen before pressing the confirmation button.

He added that the public needed to be continuously educated to avoid falling victim to such service fraud.
