PKR polls: Election committee urged to wisely manage nepotism perceptions
A political analyst has argued that it is inaccurate to equate Nurul Izzah’s potential candidacy with nepotism.

SHAH ALAM – The upcoming PKR elections have ignited debate, particularly regarding Nurul Izzah Anwar's potential bid for the deputy president position.
In the wake of these proposals, the Election Committee (JPP) faced the challenge of addressing public perceptions linking the party to nepotism and cronyism.
Universiti Malaya political analyst Dr Mohammad Tawfiq Yaakub stressed the need for clarity once the official list of candidates is released, especially amid concerns from newer members and the public.
“Long-time members and party leaders likely understand the process, but claims of nepotism may sway newer members and outsiders,” he told Sinar.
Tawfiq argued that it is inaccurate to equate Nurul Izzah’s potential candidacy with nepotism.
“Nepotism implies undue favour from a leader toward family, but this is an elected position determined by party members, not the president,” he added.
The 2025 PKR party polls have garnered renewed attention following suggestions from several leaders at various party levels that Nurul Izzah should contest for the party’s number two spot.
If she runs and wins, she would serve alongside her father, current president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim—reviving long-standing allegations of familial dominance in the party.
Universiti Sains Malaysia’s political analyst, Professor Datuk Dr Sivamurugan Pandian echoed similar sentiments, dismissing claims of nepotism and calling Nurul Izzah a seasoned political figure.
“She is not new to politics. Nurul Izzah has been part of PKR’s struggles and understands its values. Her qualifications, experience and leadership record make her a viable candidate,” he said.
Sivamurugan added that PKR, as a democratic party, should embrace open contestation while also preparing for inevitable scrutiny.
“The deputy president post is especially significant now, as it positions the winner as a likely successor to Anwar, whose leadership tenure may conclude within the next three years,” he said.
