Sushi King turns 30 with refreshed brand, bold wasabi menu and expansion plans
The anniversary was all about sharing the joy of serving their guests, with exciting innovations in every bite and a fresh new look.

SHAH ALAM – International Japanese food chain Sushi King, whose Malaysian branch was founded by Tan Sri Datuk Seri Fumihiko Konishi, successfully celebrated its 30th anniversary recently with new menus, a limited-time wasabi-infused selection, a refreshed brand look, and more.
Eyeing innovation not just in their menus with authentic Japanese flavours from the kitchen, the brand reflects its innovative spirit since the start, with continued dedication to providing an exceptional dining experience. Sushi King was established in 1995 with a mission to bring the authentic Japanese culinary experience closer to everyday Malaysians, beyond the exclusivity of fine dining.
They have championed accessible and affordable Japanese cuisine in the local food scene, with outlets nationwide proudly embracing halal status since 2016, as highlighted in their press statement. According to their founder, the anniversary marks not just three decades of serving their beloved customers, but the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Sushi King — whether through a timeless favourite or a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
“We want every plate on our Kaiten belt to deliver something memorable, with a mix of variety and authenticity. Alongside our iconic sushi plates, our freshly made dishes straight from the kitchen add another layer of flavour, enhancing your overall halal-certified Japanese dining experience,” he added.
Konishi further said that the anniversary was all about sharing the joy of serving their guests, with exciting innovations in every bite and a fresh new look.
The 30th anniversary celebration was held in Putrajaya, revealing a peek of its refreshed menu, including a spread of Yakimono and Agemono delectables, on top of over 60 varieties of sushi on its upgraded 100-metre Kaiten belt. With up to 200 items offered — from bentos and donburi to ramen and udon — guests were invited to indulge in a delightful range of flavours with Sushi King.
Adding to the excitement, Sushi King’s Head Chef, Takeshi Torita, made a special appearance during the event, offering a live demonstration that showcased his sushi-making expertise through precise salmon slicing, reflecting his culinary mastery behind every cut.
Originating from Tokyo, the chef brought with him years of experience as a sushi master in Japan, which he has continued to share with Malaysians through his 12-year journey with Sushi King. Kicking things off ahead of the anniversary celebration, Sushi King introduced wasabi-infused offerings, elevating the familiar condiment into a bold hero flavour across a limited-time menu.
The anniversary, marking the start of a new chapter for the chain, is set to undergo a gradual transformation in 2025 to build on the momentum. It begins with a new, energised store design, showcasing a sophisticated look that reflects the brand's growth over the years. Changes include plans for store expansion, targeting ten new locations by the second half of 2025.
The anniversary was celebrated through an event with invited guests at Alamanda Mall, Putrajaya, from May 16 to 18, where they enjoyed over 60 varieties of Japanese treats — with every plate going for only RM3.50.
Customers can expect the brand’s refreshed look in the coming months, featuring a modernised store design alongside innovative menu offerings. “Sushi King remains committed to elevating the dining experience for customers and further establishing itself as the leading choice for halal-certified Japanese cuisine in Malaysia,” the statement read.
