Why is Jakarta’s public transport system now ranked better than KL's?
According to a survey by global lifestyle magazine Time Out, the Indonesian capital was ranked 17th globally, losing only to Singapore in the regional standings.

SHAH ALAM – In a significant development for urban mobility, Jakarta's public transport system has been ranked among the best in the world, with the city coming in second in Southeast Asia.
According to a survey by global lifestyle magazine Time Out, the Indonesian capital was ranked 17th globally, losing only to Singapore in the regional standings.
In a statement, the Jakarta Governor, who recently praised the city's transit system, highlighted its rise in global rankings.
"Out of 50 cities, over 18,000 respondents surveyed, Jakarta is now in 17th place. In Southeast Asia, we only lost to Singapore. We’re better than Kuala Lumpur, Manila, even Bangkok," he said, as quoted by Indonesian news outlet Detik.
The survey's findings placed Jakarta alongside some of the world’s most respected transport-friendly cities, including Hong Kong, Shanghai, London, Vienna, Zurich and Doha.
The list also featured Mumbai and Delhi, reflecting the increasing importance of public transport in some of the world’s largest cities.
The Governor said the result reflected growing international recognition of Jakarta’s commitment to enhancing its public infrastructure and services.
He expressed hope that the city would not settle for 17th place but continue to strive for further improvement in future rankings.
For Jakarta, a city long associated with notorious traffic congestion, the recognition marks a significant shift in both public perception and international opinion.
How the city builds on this momentum remains to be seen, but for now, Jakarta is enjoying its place in the spotlight.
