SHAH ALAM - Turns out, women in Malaysia are carrying the crown of happiness, at least according to the Malaysia Happiness Survey 2024.
The survey revealed that women score slightly higher than men when it came to life satisfaction and overall well-being.
When it comes to happiness, the numbers speak. Women scored 7.62 on the Malaysia Happiness Index (MHI), edging out men who scored 7.57.
It might not sound like a big gap but in the world of statistics, even a small lead can tell an interesting story about daily life.
The survey categorises happiness levels into five tiers:
- 0.00 – 2.00: Very unhappy
- 2.01 – 4.00: Unhappy
- 4.01 – 6.00: Moderately happy
- 6.01 – 8.00: Happy
- 8.01 – 10.00: Very happy
With both men and women landing in the “happy” range, Malaysia as a whole is sitting on the brighter side of the scale.
Therefore, what makes Malaysian women just a tad happier? The survey showed that women excel in eight out of 13 happiness components.
These included family ties, religion and spirituality, time management, housing and environment, working life, social participation, communication facilities and culture.
Basically, women were finding more joy in the everyday things that shaped life’s balance.
For example, when it came to family, both genders rated it highly where men at 8.62, women at 8.66.

However, women still scored higher, which reflected strong bonds with parents, children and siblings, as well as feelings of safety and stability within the home.
In the religion and spiritual component, women again led with a score of 8.72, compared to men’s 8.66, showing that faith and meaning in life played a big role in their happiness.
Furthermore, time used also gave women an advantage, with a score of 7.98 compared to men’s 7.68.
Think better sleep, quality rest, leisure and social time—something women seemed to be balancing more effectively.
The Malaysia Happiness Survey, conducted by the Department of Statistics Malaysia, measured happiness across physical, social, emotional and spiritual dimensions.
So while the competition between the sexes was close, it was thanks to a stronger sense of connection, balance and spirituality that made women in Malaysia officially the happier bunch.
