SHAH ALAM – Che Puan Mahkota Kelantan, Sofie Louise Johansson has called on Malaysians to prioritise early detection and awareness of breast cancer, stressing that survivability rates are far higher when the disease is diagnosed at an early stage.

She stressed that too many people only seek treatment after the disease has advanced when early detection could make a critical difference.

"I think it's very important to raise awareness on breast cancer because, unfortunately, a lot of people go too late when they could go early to minimise the risk.

"Sometimes when you start talking about this matter, you find that more people have gone through the same experience. That’s why I think it’s very important to help people with their health,” she told Sinar Daily.

Echoing her views, Tengku Bendehara Dr Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra highlighted that while medical advancements in cancer treatment have significantly improved outcomes, these benefits can only be realised through early testing.

"To increase awareness, especially early diagnosis, is crucial. Cancer treatment has changed over the years, with more and more breakthroughs.

"There are more and more breakthroughs when it comes to treatment, and it seems critical that early detection is done because survivability rates also go up,” he said.

He also stated that social attitudes toward cancer screening are shifting compared to the old days.

Beyond her advocacy for health, Che Puan Sofie is also known for her passion for fitness and the outdoors.

When asked about her favourite hiking spots in Kelantan, she recommended Gunung Stong, home to one of the tallest waterfalls in Southeast Asia.

"Gunung Stong by the waterfall, that is so lovely, very nice. It’s one of the tallest waterfalls in Southeast Asia, so it’s very beautiful,” she said.

On how she balances her personal interests with her role in supporting the local community, Che Puan Sofie highlighted the significance of making healthy lifestyles accessible to everyone.

“I like to go to Tengku Anis Park because the running track is very nicely built up. When I went there, I was very surprised to see many ladies also running in this park.

"Before I moved here, I thought maybe a lot of men do exercise, but when you go there, you can see so many females and I’m very happy to see that,” she said.
