KUALA LANGAT – A total of 165 cyclists took part in the inaugural Carey Heritage Ride 2025, an event that combined cycling and eco-tourism within the palm oil estates operated by SD Guthrie Berhad (Guthrie) on Carey Island.
Held on Sunday, the ride featured three distance categories (20km, 45km, and 100km), attracting participants of all ages, including the oldest rider, aged 82.

Guthrie Group Managing Director Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha said the event was not only a recreational activity but also an effort to showcase the natural beauty and unique heritage of Carey Island to the public.
“Everything went smoothly without any untoward incident and the weather was perfect. Many participants gave positive feedback as the event was well-organised with clear signage, pit stops and directions,” he told Sinar.
The event highlighted Guthrie’s commitment to strengthening ties among employees, local communities and nature enthusiasts through sports and eco-based tourism.

Helmy emphasised that Carey Island was chosen not only because it is one of Guthrie’s plantation areas but also due to its comprehensive facilities, including a palm oil mill, research centre, biodiesel plant and the Golden Hope Academy, which trains future executives and workforce for the company.

“The island is also home to the Mah Meri Orang Asli community, whose culture we featured as part of the programme to introduce their traditions to visitors,” he added.
Participants cycled through scenic palm oil routes and traditional villages, enjoying the lush green landscape of Carey Island.
“Many were surprised to discover such natural beauty just 40 to 45 minutes from Kuala Lumpur,” he said.
The Carey Heritage Ride also coincided with National Sports Month, aligning with Guthrie’s efforts to promote healthy lifestyles among its employees.
“We encourage our staff to be active, cycling, running, playing tennis, or volleyball. Two weeks ago, we held the Carey Run, and the response was overwhelming,” he said.
He also revealed plans to make the cycling event a regular feature, possibly every two months instead of just once a year.
“Next year, we plan to hold the Carey Ride every two months, with six sessions in total.
“The next edition will likely take place in February. We may set a maximum distance of 70–75km and open it to the public with a minimal registration fee,” he said.
Board Member Celebrates Personal Milestone
Guthrie Board Member Datuk Seri Sharifah Sofianny Syed Hussain, who completed the 20km route, described the experience as a personal achievement since she is not an avid cyclist.
“Events like this strengthen our bond as one big Guthrie family,” she said.

She also urged that Carey Island be further promoted as a national treasure due to its ecological and cultural significance.
“Carey Island is truly a national gem, rich with biodiversity and heritage. I’m proud that Guthrie plays a part in preserving and promoting it,” she added.
Oldest Rider at 82 Defies Age
Eighty-two-year-old Abdul Latiff Nazir, a former army personnel, proved that age is no barrier as he completed the 45km route with determination.

“Cycling keeps me healthy and active. At my age, it’s important to keep moving to stay strong and flexible,” he said.
He praised Guthrie’s consistent efforts in organising sports activities, which foster camaraderie and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
“I always join Guthrie events because I get to exercise, make friends, and stay active. Despite my age, I’m healthy and my conditions are well-controlled,” he added.
Another participant, Luqman Hakim Yazid, 31, who completed the 100km route, described the event as enjoyable despite the hot weather.

“It was more of a fun ride than a race for me. The organisers did a great job with clear markers and well-planned facilities,” he said.
