SHAH ALAM - Bersatu Deputy President Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said he is prepared to take over the party’s leadership when Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin decides to step down, stressing that the decision lies entirely with the President.

Speaking on BFM’s Breakfast Grille, Hamzah described his position as one of patience and loyalty, likening the party’s leadership transition to a relay race.

“I think it is quite well known that the President wants to hand the baton to me when he steps down. As Deputy President, I am just waiting. Like a 4 x 100 metre relay, perhaps I am the second runner and he is the first.

“So, I am just waiting. When he gets close enough and hands me the baton, I will take it, as long as it is before the line.

“As I said during the closing speech at Bersatu’s Annual General Assembly, I emphasised to everyone that I am the President’s number one supporter,” he said.

Responding to reports of internal divisions, Hamzah acknowledged that disputes are normal within any political party, including Bersatu.

He highlighted that leadership-related disagreements happen in all parties and expressed hope that any internal issues in Bersatu would be resolved swiftly and not allowed to persist.

Hamzah also commented on claims of three factions within the party; one aligned with Muhyiddin, another with Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and a third with himself. He viewed such claims positively, saying they reflect the party’s depth of leadership.

“When people say there are Muhyiddin, Azmin and Hamzah blocs within Bersatu, that actually means the party has many leaders recognised by the people. That is a good thing for the party,” he shared.

While he could not confirm the existence of these blocs, Hamzah added that such perceptions highlight Bersatu’s strength in having many respected and influential leaders.
