SHAH ALAM – A Nepalese man had allegedly sodomising a cat before hurling it from the fourth floor of an apartment in Kota Kemuning, a horrifying act that has left residents of the building reeling in shock.
Shah Alam district deputy police chief Superintendent Ramsay Anak Embol said the case came to light after a resident of Pangsapuri Randa in Seksyen 31, here, lodged a report at 12.30am on Saturday, claiming she saw the suspect naked and allegedly assaulting the animal.
He said the complainant's husband rushed to the fourth floor to confront the suspect, but the suspect was said to have flung the cat over the ledge before escaping.
The incident was also recorded by the complainant using her mobile phone.
Ramsay said the suspect, a 33-year-old Nepalese man was arrested at 4.45am, the same day.
He added that the suspect, who also works as a security guard at the apartment, has been remanded for five days until Nov 19 to assist investigations.
"Initial checks show the suspect has no mental health issues and was under the influence of alcohol during the incident," he said.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 377 of the Penal Code and Section 428 of the Penal Code.
Meanwhile, residents described the act as cruel, inhumane and deeply disturbing, with many expressing disbelief that such an incident could take place in their neighbourhood.
A resident known as Farah, 50, said this was the first such incident she had encountered despite having lived there for many years.
"That he (the suspect) could bring himself to do such a thing… where is his humanity?
"Even someone who is mentally unstable would not usually think of doing something like that," she told Sinar on Sunday.
She added that she had previously seen the body of a cat, believed to have died recently, near the ground floor of her apartment block.
"At that time, my husband and I had just reached home. I saw the cat’s body and it was still intact and not decomposed.
"I’m not entirely sure if it was the same cat involved in the incident, as there are many strays here. But regardless, no animal deserves such cruelty," she said.
Another resident, Azri, 30, said he was furious that someone could commit something so morally depraved towards an animal.
He claimed that the overcrowding of foreign nationals might be contributing to such crimes.
"This could be linked to their lifestyle, for example, alcohol consumption. When someone is intoxicated and not thinking clearly, anything can happen," he added.
Another resident, Fiza, 40, said the incident has made her afraid to let her children play outside.
"I’m worried now that something like this could happen in our neighbourhood.
"I’m anxious about allowing my children to play outdoors because we don’t know what dangers might be lurking. I really hope such cruel acts will not happen again," she said.
