KUALA LUMPUR - Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the postponement of the party’s elections is aimed at allowing Umno to focus on preparations for the 16th general election (GE16).

He said the party needs to strengthen its internal machinery to face the Melaka and Johor state elections as well as GE16.

"Our focus is on elections first. If we are preoccupied with party elections, all sorts of issues will arise,” he told reporters here today.

Yesterday, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party will only hold its elections after GE16, following amendments to the party constitution approved at a Special Umno General Assembly in 2022.

Meanwhile, Asyraf Wajdi confirmed that Umno has yet to receive any application from former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin to rejoin the party. - BERNAMA
