KUALA LUMPUR – The appointment of Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as Chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN) was made after taking into account the strengths he possesses within the coalition.

PN Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said these criteria were among the key factors behind the party’s decision to nominate the Terengganu Menteri Besar to replace Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who stepped down from the post in January.

“He has served two terms as Menteri Besar of Terengganu. He has also demonstrated strong performance in both the general election and the state election in Terengganu by winning seats under the PN banner.

“So these are among the criteria as to why Pas chose Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri as Pas’ representative to lead PN,” he said.

Takiyuddin was speaking at a press conference after the PN extraordinary  Supreme Council meeting at the Pas headquarters here today.

Elaborating further, Takiyuddin, who is also Pas secretary-general, said the selection of Dr Samsuri that was accepted by all four PN component parties, including those representing the Chinese and Indian communities, reflected his capability as a leader.

He added that they believed the appointment of the Kemaman MP would enable the coalition to restore its stability, which had previously been affected by internal turmoil.

“I think when all our parties in PN, two Malay-based parties, one Chinese-based party, one Indian-based party, and possibly another new Indian-based party coming in, accept him as the new PN chairman, it shows that he can play an important role in resolving issues in a multiracial society.

“It also provides the people with a political alternative for the future, between the government and others,” he said.

The chairmanship fell vacant following Muhyiddin's resignation on Jan 1 after Pas leaders reportedly called on him to relinquish the post amid tensions between Bersatu and Pas over the Perlis Menteri Besar crisis.
