LARUT - Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has criticised Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, describing the Bersatu president’s questioning of his meetings with several political leaders as childish.

The Larut MP said it was normal for politicians to meet leaders from different parties, including ministers and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Hamzah stressed that such meetings should not be turned into an issue as they are part of political engagement.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has criticised Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, describing the Bersatu president’s questioning of his meetings with several political leaders as childish.

"Why did I not inform Muhyiddin? I am the opposition leader. If I want to meet Anthony Loke from DAP, can I? As the opposition leader, if I want to meet a minister or even the Deputy Prime Minister, can I?

"What is he afraid of? Is he worried that Zahid might bring him down as party president? That is just an excuse to sack me. There is no need to say more.

"To me this is childish. All of us are already old. There is no need to create stories that are untrue," he said.

He said this to reporters after presenting contributions to suraus and mosques in the Larut parliamentary constituency on Thursday.

Hamzah also rejected claims that he had betrayed the party, saying the allegation was merely used as justification to remove him.

In a separate development, Hamzah confirmed that several political parties have invited him to join them, including Parti Keluarga Malaysia (PKM).

He said discussions with PKM have progressed to about 90 per cent, although a final decision has yet to be made.

"Many leaders of smaller parties feel that perhaps with my presence I can help make their parties bigger and emerge as players at the national level.

"I am not only meeting PKM, but also several other parties. So we will make a decision after examining the goals and struggles of the parties concerned," he said.

Responding to Muhyiddin’s statement that any party joined by Hamzah would not be accepted into cooperation with Perikatan Nasional (PN), he said the matter should not be exaggerated.

He said political cooperation can take many forms as long as it gains public support.

"If the people say I can cooperate with PN, we can cooperate. Cooperation has many ways. The important thing is that the goals of our struggle can be accepted by the people," he said.

Hamzah also confirmed that he would maintain the annual tradition of providing contributions to surau and mosques in the Larut parliamentary constituency during Ramadan.

This year, he said, 113 suraus and 41 mosques in the area received contributions to help prepare food for breaking fast.

Previously, it was reported that Muhyiddin said he would reject any attempt at cooperation with PN if Hamzah and his new political platform sought to work with the coalition.

Muhyiddin said after experiencing betrayal, he needed to be more cautious to avoid a similar situation in the future.
