SHAH ALAM - Mandiri has called for the immediate release of three activists who were detained by authorities while staging a protest during the Wacana Ilmiah Perdana programme organised by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and Asia e University at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTC KL) today.

Mandiri coordinator Wong Kukui said the three activists had attended the event to carry out a peaceful and silent protest over integrity issues involving MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

According to him, the protest was linked to controversies surrounding Azam Baki’s share ownership and alleged "corporate mafia" activities within the MACC.

“Mandiri strongly condemns the authorities’ action in detaining three activists from the #TangkapAzamBaki Secretariat, including two Mandiri coordinators and a student activist who attended the programme.

“They should stop all forms of intimidation against activists and students,” he said in a statement today.

Earlier, the calm atmosphere at the Wacana Ilmiah Perdana held at Dewan Tun Dr Ismail, WTCKL turned chaotic when a group of individuals suddenly staged a protest this afternoon at around 2.40 pm.

During the event, two men were seen holding up placards reading “Tangkap Azam Baki” and “Azam Baki Simbol Reformati” while the keynote address was ongoing.

The act took place as the MACC chief was delivering his speech at the event.

The situation grew more tense when a man wearing a black T-shirt labelled “Pusat Pembangunan Rakyat (Mandiri)” was seen arguing with officers on duty.

It is understood that all individuals involved were later detained and escorted out of the hall by authorities to defuse the situation.

Wong added that the individual who should be arrested and investigated is Azam Baki himself, not members of the public demanding accountability.

“Release them immediately! Arrest Azam Baki,” he said.
