KUALA LUMPUR - Police are actively tracking down the individual responsible for triggering chaos by setting off fireworks during the "Tangkap Azam Baki" rally in the capital on Saturday.

Dang Wangi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam said police have opened an investigation paper under Section 6 and Section 8 of the Explosive Substances Act 1957.

He said efforts are underway to identify those involved and to uncover the mastermind behind the incident.

He said that as of now, no police reports have been received from members of the public or traders regarding the incident.

He also revealed that upon inspection, one undetonated packet of fireworks was found at the scene, believed to be of the festive celebration variety.

"Police also do not rule out the possibility of calling up the organisers, individuals involved, as well as independent witnesses who saw the incident, to assist in completing the investigation," he said.

On the rally itself, Sazalee said it was estimated to have drawn around 300 participants, who marched from the Sogo shopping complex to the Jalan Tun Perak intersection near Dataran Merdeka before dispersing at 5.30pm.

"A total of 200 police personnel were involved in the monitoring operation, including assistance from the Kuala Lumpur Contingent Police Headquarters and Bukit Aman," he said.

He added that police did not receive any formal application or notification from the rally secretariat regarding the organisation of the gathering.

"Police were deployed to ensure safety and public order throughout the rally today," he said.
