SHAH ALAM – SD Guthrie Berhad has launched Elaeis Gardens, a rebranded eco-destination concept that transforms its traditionally private plantation estates into accessible spaces focused on sustainability, education and hospitality.
The name “Elaeis” is derived from Elaeis guineensis, the scientific genus of the oil palm, reflecting the company’s deep-rooted connection to the crop and its role in Malaysia’s economic development.
The initiative is guided by four core pillars – Stay, Dine, Golf and Experience – and reflects the company’s move towards greater openness, allowing visitors to explore plantation environments while learning about sustainable palm oil production.
At the centre of the concept is the philosophy of Di Sisi Alam (Alongside Nature), which highlights Guthrie’s belief that industrial operations can coexist with environmental stewardship.

Its group managing director Mohd Haris Mohd Arshad said the rebrand represents a broader transformation in how the company engages with the public.
“Elaeis Gardens represents an evolution in how we share our landscapes and our story.
“It also reflects our commitment to responsible ecotourism and community connection, as well as our belief that it is possible to balance large-scale palm oil operations with genuine hospitality, education and care for nature,” he said.
Haris added that guided by their philosophy of Di Sisi Alam, they are opening their plantation landscapes as spaces for learning, connection and discovery, while continuing to uphold the highest standards of responsible production.
“This is about transforming preserved heritage into shared heritage,” he said.
Elaeis Gardens currently comprises nine locations across Malaysia, offering a range of experiences tailored to different visitor interests.
The flagship site is located at Carey Island in Selangor, featuring heritage bungalows for accommodation and events, an 18-hole golf course, the “Know Your Palm Oil” programme, a museum and the Dapo Carey restaurant.
Other locations include Merlimau and Eco Retreat in Melaka; Sua Betong in Negeri Sembilan; Tangkak and Layang-Layang in Johor; Dublin Golf Club in Kedah; Rajawali in Sarawak; and Tasik Impian in Sabah.
Visitors can also experience local cuisine at Dapo Carey and Dapo Devon in Melaka, alongside nature-based and heritage accommodation offerings.
The launch reflects Guthrie’s broader sustainability agenda, positioning its plantation estates not only as production sites but also as platforms for education, tourism and community engagement.
