The Mandalorian and Grogu: Perfect entertainment for the kids

It has just the right amount of laser shots and other special effects to keep children glued to the screen despite the relatively slow storyline.

If we were to talk about movies, the Star Wars series were probably among the most iconic films ever made in film history. The first Star Wars: Episode IV set the standards for countless sci-fi flicks, creating a worldwide cult of fans and followers.

Hence any prequel or sequel of the Star Wars universe would always draw attention and become a much-awaited spectacle. Hence, it is no surprise that the latest Mandalorian and Grogu production, was something loyal Star Wars fans were anticipating.

The excitement is further magnified thanks to the TV series revolving around the same characters of this movie.

The film (like the TV show) shares the adventures of inter-galactic bounty hunter Din Djarin (played by Pedro Pascal), also known as The Mandalorian, and his foundling Grogu (who is from the same species as Master Yoda of Star Wars).

Working with the New Republic against the evil Empire, Djarin who is referred to as ‘Mando’ in the movie is assigned to locate and capture a warlord of the empire known as Coin. However the only people who have information regarding Coin are the Hutt twin leaders, siblings of the famous Jabba The Hutt, the ruthless ruler of the Hutt species.

To obtain this information from the Hutt twins, Mando has to perform a task assigned by the twins, which is to free their nephew Rotta the Hutt (heir to the Hutt throne) who is kidnapped on another planet. This is where the movie’s narrative unfolds as Mando and his little Grogu embark on a dangerous mission to rescue Rotta.

Expectations were naturally very high for this movie considering the last few films of the Star Wars universe were truly epic and exciting. Unfortunately according to this writer, this flick failed to hit the mark.

It was underwhelming considering the hype surrounding the movie and the build-up which spawned from the TV series. From the get-go, the film seems more of an episode (or two) from the TV series of the same name.

For some unexplained reason, it did not live up to the buzz everyone was hoping for. Personally, I felt the storyline was rather weak with some scenes probably unnecessary. In fact, some of the alien creatures and robot droids looked very unsophisticated compared to the previous Star Wars films.

They looked a tad unconvincing and even Grogu the second main character of the movie, really resembled a simple moving toy and not a life-like alien creature.

However, Grogu’s extremely cute figure and gestures do add some comedic colours to everyone’s delight, providing the much-needed laughter here and there.

The film also seemed more like a kids’ fantasy movie rather than a sci-fi epic with all the unconvincing alien characters and space ships filling the big screen.

This actually makes the movie a perfect kids movie as I am certain that children would definitely enjoy it. It has just the right amount of laser shots and other special effects to keep children glued to the screen despite the relatively slow storyline.

We will however credit the amazing cast as Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver can never fail to amuse you with their craft. Unfortunately, a strong cast can’t always ensure the success of a production as there were just too many loose ends that this writer thinks needed much fixing.

All in all, it makes a perfect movie to watch for the children and I repeat, your kids (especially those below 15) will most probably enjoy the movie.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is currently showing in all Malaysian cinemas starting 21 May 2026.
