THE misty peaks of Genting Highlands are about to get a lot louder and considerably colder, this June.
Malaysia’s premier melodic techno experience, Sunset by Neon, is returning on June 20, staging one of its most ambitious editions yet above the clouds.
This time, the electronic music festival is handing over the keys to Ukrainian powerhouse duo Artbat, who are bringing their globally acclaimed, visionary event concept Upperground to local shores for the first time.
Headlining the night are Artbat, the Ukrainian duo behind some of melodic techno’s most defining records including Horizon, For A Feeling, Upperground, Atlas and their globally acclaimed remix of Empire of the Sun’s We Are The People.
Known for commanding stages at Tomorrowland, Afterlife, Zamna, Ultra Music Festival and Ushuaïa Ibiza, Artbat now bring their visionary concept Upperground to Malaysia for the very first time.
The upcoming lifestyle festival promises to transform the chilly mountain landscape into an immersive, multi-sensory escape.

A rare collision of worlds
The single-stage showcase features a carefully curated lineup that bridges the gap between commercial dance music and underground melodic soundscapes.
Joining the headliners is Dutch-Moroccan superstar R3hab. While widely recognised as a mainstream festival heavyweight, R3hab has increasingly stepped into the melodic techno realm, culminating in highly anticipated collaborations with Artbat such as Flight Mode. His performance on the highland stage marks a rare convergence of these musical styles, alongside his long-awaited return to the country.
The night will also mark the highly anticipated Malaysian debut of German producer and composer Chris Avantgarde. Best known as the co-creator of Consciousness - a track that became a defining anthem of the modern melodic techno movement alongside Anyma - Avantgarde is expected to bring his trademark cinematic soundscapes and deep, emotional productions to the high-altitude dancefloor.
Rounding out the international lineup are high-energy festival regulars Plastik Funk and 7Skies, ensuring the energy remains high from afternoon until the early hours of the morning.
The organisers, in a statement said, bringing a world-renowned clubbing concept like Upperground to Malaysia required months of extensive planning to match the production value seen at European festivals.
“From the very beginning, Sunset by Neon was always about creating experiences that feel impossible in Malaysia, the kind of moments you travel overseas to witness.
“We knew if we were bringing Upperground here, it had to feel truly special. Over the past few months, our team has been working closely alongside the Upperground team to build an experience worthy of the trust our audience continues to place in us," the statement read.
To pull this off, the local production team is working hand in hand with Upperground’s international crew.
Festivalgoers can expect the signature atmospheric energy the event series is known for, supercharged with large-scale visuals, synchronised lighting arrays and cinematic sound design tailored specifically to the unique acoustics of the highland venue.
With doors opening at 4pm, attendees will be able to watch the sky shift into twilight against a backdrop of greenery before the full visual production takes over the night.
