KOTA BHARU – Pas expects the 16th General Election (GE16) to be held between October and November this year, based on current political developments and increasingly clear indications.

Pas vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah said the party has instructed its entire machinery to strengthen preparations at all levels in anticipation of a possible dissolution of Parliament in the near future.

He said that several upcoming state elections, including in Johor, Negeri Sembilan and possibly Melaka, are seen as signs that GE16 is drawing closer.

“This year is expected to see GE16. In the near term, Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections will take place, followed possibly by Melaka.

“It is likely that after the Melaka state election, Parliament will be dissolved as there are many signs and rumours pointing to a general election this year, although the exact month or date remains uncertain,” he said while speaking at the Pas Pengkalan Chepa 54th Annual General Meeting here on Wednesday.

The meeting was officiated by Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud.

Amar, who is also the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker, said that while there is speculation of a parliamentary dissolution as early as July, stronger views currently point towards late October or November.

“Some predict July after the Prime Minister returns from an overseas visit, but stronger views suggest late October and November.

“However, what is important is that we must increase commitment, determination and strengthen the party’s position to face the possibility of a general election,” he said.

Meanwhile, he reminded party machinery not to adopt a last-minute working culture, as the current political landscape is becoming more challenging, particularly in efforts to win support from young voters.

“We cannot predict or read the minds of voters, especially the youth, as their way of thinking is different.

“I also remind the machinery not to underestimate the presence of new parties, as their approaches are capable of attracting young voters’ attention,” he said.
