Johor polls: Alwiyah Talib named BN candidate for Endau, weeks after defecting from Bersatu

Alwiyah's selection came as a surprise to many, given the brief timeline since her return to Umno. She had previously defected from Umno after winning the seat in the 2018 polls.

JOHOR BAHRU - Incumbent Endau assemblyman Alwiyah Talib, who recently left Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) to rejoin Umno earlier this month, has been named Barisan Nasional’s (BN) candidate for the seat in the upcoming 16th Johor State Election.

The announcement was made by Johor BN Chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi during the coalition's candidate unveiling ceremony at the Johor Umno Headquarters here on Wednesday.

Alwiyah's selection came as a surprise to many, given the brief timeline since her return to Umno. She had previously defected from Umno after winning the seat in the 2018 polls.

On June 4, Alwiyah, who was serving as the Mersing Bersatu division chief, abruptly resigned from the party with immediate effect. She stated at the time that her decision was uncoerced and made solely to secure a better future for her constituents while fostering political unity in Endau.

Alwiyah first won the Endau state seat under a BN-Umno ticket in the 14th General Election (GE14) in May 2018, before crossing over to Bersatu later that same month alongside several other Umno assemblymen.

She successfully defended the seat under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) banner in the 2022 state polls, and was later elected as the Mersing Bersatu division chief on March 10.

The Endau state seat is expected to witness a fierce contest in the July 11 polls, as the constituency has long been considered one of PN's primary strongholds in the Mersing district.
