MELAKA – The battle for Melaka's 28 state assembly seats begins today, with nomination day setting the stage for a 14-day campaign that will test coalition alliances, party machinery and voter support ahead of the Nov 14 state election.

Prospective candidates are expected to submit their nomination papers at 28 centres across the state between 9am and 10am, before returning officers announce the final line-up.

The Election Commission (EC) recorded 189 nomination forms sold as of Thursday night, with 45 prospective candidates having paid their deposits.

A total of 687,697 voters are eligible to cast their ballots, comprising 675,166 ordinary voters, 9,769 military personnel and their spouses, and 2,762 police personnel.

Early voting is scheduled for Nov 10.

The election will see Barisan Nasional (BN), Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) seeking to strengthen their respective positions, while the entry of smaller parties could complicate contests in several constituencies.

PH has announced it will contest 24 seats, with Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) fielding 10 candidates, while DAP and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) will contest seven each.

BN has announced 22 candidates, comprising 18 from Umno, three from MCA and one from MIC.

PN has announced five candidates, including two each from Pas and Parti Wawasan Negara (Wawasan) and one from Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan).

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is expected to contest eight seats, while Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama) has announced plans to field 16 candidates.

The final nominations will establish the number of straight fights and multi-cornered contests, particularly in constituencies where competing parties may find themselves on opposite sides despite broader political cooperation.

Among the notable candidates announced are BN chairman and caretaker Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh for Tanjung Bidara, Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh for Merlimau and incumbent Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem for Duyong.

PH is fielding former chief minister Adly Zahari in Bukit Katil, while PKR has named Datuk Azman Abidin, secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, for Paya Rumput. DAP has named former state assembly deputy speaker Kerk Chee Yee for Ayer Keroh.

Other notable contenders include Gerakan's Datuk Seri Michael Gan in Ayer Keroh and Bersatu's Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad in Kelebang.

Bemban will also draw attention with Bersama candidate Dr Muhammad Solehin Saleh, the elder brother of Dr Akmal, entering the contest.

Beyond the candidate line-up, several constituencies could prove decisive because of their narrow winning margins in the 2021 election, when 13 of the 28 seats were decided by fewer than 1,000 votes.

Pengkalan Batu recorded the narrowest majority, with BN winning by just 131 votes, followed by Duyong with 200 votes and Tanjung Bidara with 364 votes.

Other closely contested seats included Bemban, won by PN's Bersatu with a 328-vote majority, Sungai Udang with 530 votes, Gadek and Durian Tunggal with 559 votes each, and Paya Rumput with 629 votes.

These constituencies will offer an early indication of whether parties can retain their previous support or win over voters who backed rival candidates in 2021.

What is at stake for the coalitions?

For BN, the election is about defending its commanding victory in 2021, when it secured 21 of the 28 seats and formed the state government.

However, its ability to repeat that performance will be tested by voter sentiment, competition from rival parties and tensions within its own ranks. MCA's protest over its reduced seat allocation during the candidate announcement has raised questions about the cohesion of the coalition's component parties.

PH, meanwhile, is seeking to recover from its poor showing in 2021, when its representation fell from 15 seats in the previous assembly to just five, while PKR failed to win any constituencies.

As the coalition anchoring the federal government under Anwar, PH will be looking to translate its position at the national level into stronger electoral support in Melaka.

For PN, the election will test whether it can consolidate its support and expand beyond the two seats won in 2021. Its performance will also be watched against the backdrop of internal political developments and uncertainty surrounding its registration status.

Bersama's planned participation in 16 constituencies could further complicate the contests, particularly in closely fought seats. Its ability to attract voters dissatisfied with established political parties and shifting alliances will be worth watching.

But beyond the political manoeuvring, the campaign will also put the spotlight on issues affecting Melaka residents, including the cost of living, employment opportunities, housing affordability, infrastructure and the state's development agenda.

Voters will have an opportunity to assess not only the competing coalitions but also the performance of the incumbent state administration and the credibility of promises made by their challengers.

The Melaka State Legislative Assembly was dissolved on Sept 23 with the consent of Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Rustam, paving the way for the election.

A coalition needs at least 15 seats to form the state government, while 19 seats are required for a two-thirds majority.

BN won 21 seats in the 2021 election, while PH secured five and PN two.
