SHAH ALAM - The Selangor police contingent headquarters' Criminal Investigation Department (CID), through the D7 Division (Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice), successfully uncovered migrant smuggling activities through the implementation of OP PINTAS SOM in the Sabak Bernam district yesterday.

According to a Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) statement, the raids at three separate locations led to the detention of 36 individuals, comprising 25 Indonesian migrant workers, two children, and 12 individuals believed to be involved as transporters.

"Preliminary investigations found that the syndicate is believed to be involved in smuggling migrants in and out of Malaysia through unapproved routes, charging between RM1,500 and RM1,800 per person, while the transporter fee starts at RM500 for trips to locations in the Klang Valley, depending on the distance travelled.

"In the same operation, the police also seized 11 vehicles and 13 handphones, as well as cash amounting to RM4,930, which were believed to be related to the activities," said the statement.

PDRM said that the successful raid was achieved through an operation conducted over two days starting from Nov 1, involving the collaboration of the Air Operations Force (PGU) drone unit, the Marine Police Force and members of D6.

The case is being investigated under Section 26A and Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (ATIPSOM) as well as Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Meanwhile, the PDRM also said that they will continue the investigation to identify the syndicate network, including those who act as operators and coordinators of these migrant smuggling activities.

"PDRM will continue their commitment to intensify enforcement actions and combat migrant smuggling activities using illegal routes to ensure the safety and sovereignty of the country's borders are maintained," added the statement. - BERNAMA
