KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has settled the RM50mil fine imposed on him in the SRC International Sdn Bhd funds misappropriation case at the Criminal High Court registry on Friday (Nov 6).
Lawyer Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee confirmed the matter during a press conference at the court lobby.
"As of this morning, the RM50mil fine before Najib has been paid by Umno to the High Court. As a result the court has issued, pursuant to the royal pardon, the order of house arrest.
"We have the order and we will be delivering the order to the Kajang Prison," he told reporters.
Muhammad Farhan said there were still further processes before Najib could be released from prison.
"Once that process is complete, we will give a much more comprehensive press statement," he added.
When asked if Najib could be home by Friday (Nov 6), Muhammad Farhan said "if the process goes in accordance to plan".
The court complex was abuzz earlier in the day when Najib's special officer, Ahmad Lutfi Azhar, was seen at the courthouse despite Najib not having any court cases scheduled for the day.
Muhammad Farhan was later spotted and both were seen going in and out of the Criminal High Court registry as well as the court payment counter.
On Sept 18, it was reported that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim had granted Najib a conditional pardon in his SRC International Sdn Bhd case, allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
The order, however, was conditional upon Najib paying the RM50mil fine.
Shortly after, Umno launched the "Najib Razak Solidarity Fund" to crowdfund the RM50mil amount as Najib's personal and family assets remain frozen. -THE STAR
