SHAH ALAM - Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) have been urged to audit donations collected to help former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak pay his RM50 million fine.

Former Damansara MP Tony Pua said the move was important to ensure that the funds raised were obtained legally and were not proceeds of money laundering.

“Umno claims to have successfully raised RM50 million to bring back Malaysia’s most corrupt individual, Najib Razak, so that he can serve his sentence under house arrest.

“Instead of using such a huge sum to help ordinary Malaysians, they have chosen to free the individual most involved in corruption in the country.

“Umno’s true attitude is clearly evident,” he said in a Facebook post on Friday.

Sinar reported that Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed that the party had completed all payment procedures with the Kuala Lumpur High Court earlier this morning, as a condition for Najib to serve his sentence under house arrest.

He said the funds collected through the Najib Razak Solidarity Fund, which was launched on Sept 18 to assist the former Umno president, had reached its target and were sufficient.

He added that Umno had officially closed the fund’s dedicated account, which was set up to receive public donations, as no further fundraising was required for the purpose.
