SHAH ALAM - International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has told foreign students who have been waiting for their visas and passports for the past 5 months to be" patient" while the university processes their documents.

In a circular issued by the deputy rector (academic and internationalisation) Prof Ahmad Faris Ismail, today, he said the university was "working directly and closely" with the authorities to resolve the issue.

"Rest assured that the university takes the matter seriously;y and InshaAllah the issue will be resolved," it said in the circular to students.

It further told foreign students that they will be updated "from time to time."

This comes as 300 students face delays in receiving visas for up to five months and are unable to travel back to their country.

The students initially started sharing their experiences through Twitter and Facebook using #IIUMINTSTUDENTVISA hashtags.

They later decided to hold a daily protest at the university compound until their visa issue is solved.

The students had also requested local students to join their efforts, stating: "Let's gather and protest. Be it at the visa unit, the so-called International office, or even the president's office."

Some students commented on social media stating they have been waiting for months for updates, stating it was a disappointment as they had to viral the issue to get attention from the university.
