SHAH ALAM – Pas non-Muslim supporters group say party president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s controversial statement linking non-Muslims to “roots of corruption” was directed at the rich and famous.

Its chief N Balasubramaniam said he personally met Hadi a day after the controversial statement was posted on Facebook on Aug 20.

“What he (Hadi) said was that the ones who gave bribes were the rich and famous.

“We understood his meaning and did not raise the issue after,” he was quoted in Malaysiakini from a press conference in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

Asked on those who are upset by Hadi's remarks, he said, “We must understand. Where PAS is ruling, there have been no racial issues.”

“What Hadi said, certain words have been taken to create a big issue,” Balasubramaniam added.

Malaysiakini further quoted the wing's Youth Chief B Balendran stating that Hadi’s speech was taken out of context.

“It was a long text and what he meant was only a small group of people.

“Maybe what was reported was not entirely accurate and needed to be read in full,” Balendran said.
