KUALA LUMPUR - The National Athletes Welfare Foundation (Yakeb) plans to increase assistant payments to its members after receiving a RM5 million allocation in Budget 2023.

Its chairman Datuk Noorul Ariffin Abdul Majeed said the rate of increase in assistance payments including subsistence, medical equipment costs, and outpatient costs will be determined in a meeting with the board of directors to be held at the middle of this month.

Currently, he said members who apply for assistance for living costs receive RM300 monthly for six months, followed by RM20,000 a year given for costs of medical equipment whereas RM2,500 a year is given for outpatient treatment costs.

"We will also go to the ground more frequently to visit members who need care after we receive the allocation in Budget 2023," he told Bernama when contacted today.

In the meantime, Noorul Ariffin is thankful to the government for giving attention and the allocation for for the first time to YAKEB in the Budget 2023 since the foundation was set up in 2007.

"Thank you to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz as well as Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu who pushed the government for the Yakeb allocation in Budget 2023," he said.

In relation to this, Noorul Ariffin is confident that the provision can somewhat ease the burden of 2,975 members, with 80 per cent of them being in the B40 group.

When presenting Budget 2023 yesterday, Tengku Zafrul said the government will provide an allocation of RM5 million to Yakeb for the year 2023 and beyond to ensure the welfare of athletes is maintained.

A total of RM332 million is allocated to the country's sports industry in Budget 2023. - BERNAMA
