SHAH ALAM – Bersih watchdog has initiated a petition to call on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to prioritise safety over general elections as the nation prepares to face year-end monsoon.

So far it has garnered over 3,000 signatures, raising concerns over wet year-end with storms, heavy rain and floodings nationwide.

Calling it a a “rush” move to hold elections in November or December, it said it was irresponsible and a reckless act of political self-interest that can endanger the lives of voters in many east coast states including Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor.

“With climate change and extreme weather conditions, even west coast states like Selangor and Kedah could face severe floodings like what they experienced last year.

“Even Sabah and Sarawak may have floods in many areas.”

Bersih also questioned the availability of relevant authorities to help the public face floods in the midst of an election.

“How can we be ready to face the floods when our police have to look after polling centres instead of saving flood victims and many halls and schools that would be needed as flood relief centres are used as polling centers?”
