SHAH ALAM – All kinds of promises are made during election season to cheat the public, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says.

The comment was made when he was asked to comment on Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s statement that he guaranteed that if the coalition wins the upcoming 15th General Election (GE15), they would not elect any politicians as Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner.

Dr Mahathir had initially smirked when Sinar Daily asked for his response to the statement.

“They make all kinds of promises just to cheat the public, but we know they stole money when they become the government.

“That is what they are after,” Dr Mahathir said.

The Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) pro tem chairman said these leaders thought they were immune to the laws once they were in power.

“When you become the prime minister, you think you are above the law, and you steal money.

“You know what happened to Najib (former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak). Now, he is in jail,” he said.

On Friday, Zahid said he would not appoint any elected representatives or politician from the coalition to head the MACC should it form the next government.

Zahid said the coalition was committed to its war against graft and wanted to do away with the perception that BN was corrupted.
