Sri Aman candidate hopes to be the first Dayak woman in parliament

The 62-year old Sri Aman native is contesting her hometown parliamentary seat representing Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and is touted as the favourite in a four-cornered fight which also features incumbent Datuk Masir Kujat (independent), Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s (PSB) Wilson Entaban and Pakatan Harapan’s Naga Libau @ Tay Wei Wei.
Doris has previously served as Senator, having been appointed to the Dewan Negara in 2012, upon which she also became the first Dayak woman to be appointed deputy speaker of the Dewan Negara.
With two Dayak women contesting the previous general elections in 2018, which saw Sarawak People's Party (PRS) candidate coming close to wining the Selangau parliamentary seat, eventually losing out by just 486 votes to the then PKR candidate Baru Bian, who has since joined Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB).
With the prospects of an historic landmark of a first Dayak woman member of parliament seeming ever closer, added to the solid background nd track record that Doris brings to the table, a Borneo Post report suggests voters on the ground holding Doris in high regard.
Aside from being a corporate lawyer, Doris is also being backed by GPS, which offers voters a fresh start and hold the state governement after winning the state elections in December last year.
Going all out in her campaigning efforts, underlining her goals to empower women and bring their voices into parliament, Doris said women are not necessarily less capable than men but rather, they have not been given the opportunity to prove such.
"In my plans are also a focus on education and agriculture, with Sri Aman being an agriculture hub. In this aspect, I hope for an agricultural college or university to be set up in Sarawak and based in Sri Aman," she said.
