Rompin returning officer Datuk Ahmad Nasim Mohd Sidek said the postponement only involves the state seat in question, while elections for the Rompin parliamentary seat will proceed as scheduled today.
"Therefore, the issuance of ballot papers for the Tioman state assembly has been witheld until further notice. Further information will be released by the Election Commission (EC)," he said when contacted by Sinar Harian here on Saturday.
Md Yunus, 61, died at 3.30am Saturday at the Rompin Hospital due to heart complications. His death was confirmed by Rompin District Police Chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd Azahari Mukhtar.
Mohd Azhari said Md Yunus, who had a history of high blood pressure, diabetes and heart problems, reportedly complained of chest pain and was taken by his son to the Rompin Hospital by his son for treatment. Md Yunus had, in October last year, suffered a heart attack and was treated at the same hospital.
Initially, a five-horse race was scheduled for the Tioman state assembly seat, featuring Md Yunus, incumbent Datuk Seri Mohd Johari Hussain of Barisan Nasional, Osman Bakar (Pejuang), Mohd Fadzli Ramly (Pakatan Harapan) and independent candidate Sulaiman Bakar.
This was the second death of a candidate ahead of the 15th general elections.
On Nov 5, incumbent Padang Serai member of parliament M Karupaiya of Pakatan Harapan died after completing the nomination process due to bleeding in the abdomen. The EC yesterday set Nov 24 as the new nomination date for the Padang Serai parliamentary seat, while polling will be held on Dec 3.
