SHAH ALAM - An expert has suggested to Putrajaya to allow only those with full B license to purchase high-powered motorcycles over 250cc.

Road safety expert Associate Professor Dr Law Teik Hua said the move will ensure only well trained and skilled rides would ride high-powered motorcycles to reduce accidents.

"This matter should have been enforced a long time ago, why didn't we do it?," he told Sinar.

Meanwhile, Law said enforcement on driver's license for high powered riders is weak and often after an accient it is known that the rider does not have a valid license.

"The high-powered motorcycles owners are rich but why don't they want to get license? Because our enforcement is weak," he said.

Law is of the view that owners of high-powered motorcycles should not be entitled to the same facilities as motorcycles under 250cc and should pay tolls when passing highways.

"They can afford to buy big motorcycles, some of which are more expensive than cars, so they should be able to pay tolls," he added.

Endangering lives

The public are further advised not to ride high-powered motorcycles without a license because it can endanger lives, as well as making it difficult to make an insurance claim in the event of an accident.

Road Safety Associate Member of the Malaysian Road Safety Research Institute (Miros), Tengku Ahmad Marwan Tengku Mahmud said it shows the rider does not have the training and skills required to ride a large motorcycle on the road.

"When the capacity of a motorcycle engine is greater, the speed can increase much higher than a small-powered vehicle. Its braking power is also many times stronger than a low-powered motorcycle.

"For that reason, high-powered motorcycle riders need higher skills on the road compared to motorcycles under 250cc," he told Sinar.

Tengku Ahmad Marwan who is also a permanent member of the Selangor State Road Safety Council (MKJR) also revealed that there are some riders who use a trainee driving license or L license attached to their high-powered motorcycles.

"The L license is only for training at the driving institute but some people use the L license to ride motorcycles including convoying. This is an offence," he said.
