SHAH ALAM - The government needs to establish a clear and transparent selection mechanism for political appointments in statutory bodies, Finance Ministry-owned companies and government-linked companies (GLCs).

Pertubuhan Ikram Malaysia (Ikram) president Badlishah Sham Baharin said such appointments should be vetted by a panel or board such as a Parliamentary Select Committee.

"The panel needs to be represented by experienced members from various relevant backgrounds, be it from the public or private sectors or from non-Governmental organisations (NGOs).

"Apart from that the criteria of selection needs to be clear and needs to address the scope, roles and responsibilties of such leadership roles," he said in a statement today.

Badlishah was responding to reports that the reappointment of Machang member of parliament Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub as FELCRA chairman had been postponed.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had stated that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had been informed that the postponement was due to some confusion.

Badlishah welcomed the government's decision to postpone the appointment in order to appoint individuals who brought with them competence, integrity and the ability to lead such organisations effectively.

"Competency means having the ability, knowledge and skills to implement leadership duties successfully. Integrity refers to traits such as honesty and the upholding of moral principles,' he said, adding that the criteria should also emphasise on the selection of candidates that are qualified and experienced in the fields relevant to the organisations they are to lead.

"Whether the candidates are from among politicians or not, what is important is the selection of the best candidates for the job at hand, as it involves public interest and funds."
