M'sian Bar declares 'no confidence' against AG

SHAH ALAM - The Malaysian Bar has voiced its displeasure with the attorney-general's failure to defend the judiciary against attacks and uphold the rule of law.

The resolution passed today during its extraordinary general meeting showed that the judiciary has faced criticism in recent months, particularly due to the conviction of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

It further said that they were defending judicial independence and upholding the rule of law without any bias or hesitation.

“The Malaysian Bar condemns the actions of all those persons who have undermined the independence of the judiciary, scandalised the administration of justice and violated the rule of law.

“The Malaysian Bar further admonishes the conduct of the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) which undermines the independence of the judiciary," it said in a statement.

The Malaysian Bar has directed the Bar Council to give notice to the attorney-general to initiate contempt proceedings against those responsible for the attacks on the judiciary as soon as possible, failing which the Bar Council would initiate such contempt proceedings.

The former Pekan MP began serving his 12-year prison sentence on Aug 23, 2022 after he was found guilty of criminal breach of trust, power abuse, and money laundering involving RM42 million of funds belonging to SRC International.
