SHAH ALAM - The recent discussion in Parliament regarding nurses' attire, raised by Kuantan MP Wan Razali Wan Nor, highlights the persistent presence of old and outdated stereotypes within Pas.

Former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin stressed that there are numerous other pressing issues related to the Ministry of Health that should be addressed.

"As the former minister who initiated the health white paper, I believe it should be presented to discuss serious concerns such as the underinvestment in the healthcare system and the shortage of healthcare personnel.

"This situation frustrates me because it indirectly demonstrates that Pas is still influenced by outdated stereotypes.

"Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa has already clarified that the nurses' attire adheres to appropriate Syariah standards," he said during the Keluar Sekejap programme on Wednesday.

The programme was jointly organised by Khairy and former Umno Information Chief Shahril Hamdan.

During the Health White Paper debate session in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday, Wan Razali argued that the dress code for female nurses in most public healthcare facilities in the country does not comply with Syariah principles.

He urged the government to review the regulations to provide the group with more suitable clothing options.

Khairy also pointed out that Pas is increasingly recognised as a party that includes many professionals.

However, he highlighted that with just one statement, the party has the ability to influence the perspectives of Malaysians, particularly those within the moderate Malay community.
