SHAH ALAM - MCA has expressed its regrets over the actions of former DAP publicity secretary Tony Pua, who described Barisan Nasional (BN) as a corrupt coalition.

Its president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, described the statement as announcing ‘talak tiga’ (divorce) towards BN forming the unity government.

He explained that Pua’s statement did not show the full spirit of unity in the government.

"I feel upset with last night's incident in which a leader like Pua attacked and labelled BN as a corrupt party. If he said the party was corrupt, it's the same as divorcing from it. Where’s the basis for cooperation? "It felt odd. This is probably the word of a rude individual. If we want to be friends, there is no reason to badmouth them.

"In preparation to face the state elections, suddenly there is a statement that was made at an official event. Many were dumbfounded looking at what has happened," he said in a Facebook statement on Saturday.

On Friday, Pua described BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the unity government as corrupt coalitions.

He voiced his hopes that PH would be able to form its own government among the coalition components without involving Umno and BN if it won the upcoming general election (GE).

Wee said that, as one of the parties forming the Unity government, such matters should not be raised.

"If such matters are brought up, the public would ask; 'What about your own party?’ If we support the spirit of unity, it should show sincerity," he said.

He added that every leader must step forward without causing any provocation among one another.

"The Agong said move on; all leaders and the prime minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) said we should move on, so we will do that," he said.

Wee said the cooperation between the parties was not translated as well as it could have been, for example, in the state poll seat distribution negotiations.

"All kinds of accusations were made; each party has its own dignity. Don’t make us announce a divorce with you, and then you will ask for votes from others.

"The spirit of unity must be present and translated in sincerity, that’s all," he said.

He also questioned Pua’s statement on PH having to govern solo if they won in GE16.

"Wouldn’t that mean BN would be betrayed by PH? DAP would just become backstabbers?" he questioned.
